Biography

John was born in 1856 in Ballytober, Islandmagee, County Antrim, Ireland, the son of Thomas Hill and Mary Auld. He was baptised on 10-Nov-1856 in 1st Islandmagee Presbyterian Church.^[1]

In 1885 he married Sarah Nelson Brennan in 1st Islandmagee Presbyterian Church. He was a farmer from Ballytober, Islandmagee and she was from Ballykeel, also in Islandmagee. The witnesses were Arthur Hill and Essie Brennan.^[2]

During the 1901 Census of Ireland, John and Sarah were residing in a house 38 in Carnspindle (Islandmagee, Antrim) with their children; Tom aged 16, Jenny aged11, Mary Isabella aged 10, Rob aged 8, Jack aged 6, David aged 4, and Maggie aged 1. There were also 2 servants with them; James Jones aged 18 and Sara Jones aged 16, and a visitor Daniel Bowman JP aged 72. ^[3][4]

John and Sarah were residing in a house 34 in Carnspindle (Island Magee, Antrim) during the 1911 Census of Ireland with their children; Jack aged 15, David aged 13, Maggie aged 11, "Essie" aged 8, and Nelson aged 4. It was recorded that John and Sarah had been married for 25 years and had a total of 11 children with 8 still living at the time of the census.^[5][6]

John passed away on June 9th, 1938 officially recorded as aged 81years. (82 years on Gravestone).^[7] He left a will, and probate was granted to Alexander McDowell retired postal official.^[8] He is interred in the Hill Family Plot in Ballypriormore Graveyard, in Islandmagee.^[9]

   Erected by John Hill in memory of his children:- Samuel who died 11th Sep. 1889 aged 1 year and 5 months; Robert who died 13th Sep. 1889 aged 2 years and 6 months; and Jenny Napier Brennan who died 23rd April 1909 aged 19 years. Also his son David who was drowned in Regent Canal, London on 27th April 1925 and interred in Bow Cemetery, London on 10th May 1925 aged 27 years. The above named John Hill died 9th June 1938 aged 82 years. And his wife Sarah Nelson Hill who died 25th June 1950 aged 89 years.
